Task

Work with the associate dean for equity, inclusion and diversity to create a landing page for a community engagement conference for Virginia Commonwealth University and public attendees.

My Role

The main hero image, speaker images and text was provided and it was my job to design, code and launch the page using existing plugins.

Challenges

The web template for the project is particularly buggy and it is one I do not have access to, so more CSS overrides than usual were required to achieve the desired product. Also, the content trickled in over time versus all at once, so some adjustments had to be made to my initial design to incorporate expanded content. For example, a later request was to add bios for all the conference speakers (26 of them!). In order to incorporate those without adding to the page scroll, I programmed modals linked to each speaker’s name.

For each conference speaker, page visitors could click on the name and see a brief bio on a modal display. This solved the problem of a late request for adding bios for 26 speakers without making the page scroll too long.

A Template for Others

Since this initial page was created, it has been redeployed several times for other CHS symposia and conferences. Examples:
